IBM Typewriter Excellence Medal
1983
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears perspective view of IBM typewriters through the decades. Across, 1933- / 1983 / (IBM logo)

The reverse bears legend, 50 Years of / Typewriter / Excellence

It is probably hard for today's generation to understand how big a business typewriters used to be.  Today, we have general purpose laptops, voice transcription is tantalizingly close for everyday life, and laser printers are an affordable item for most American families.

Before computers, typewriters were at the heart of most business operations and many families owned a private typewriter as well.  IBM was a big player in this market and became dominant when they merged electronics with typewriters.  Before electrical typewriters, each keystroke mechanically translated into a stamp hitting an inkstrip onto the paper.  How hard you hit the key defined how solid the letter's imprint was.  You could also jam a typewriter by hitting two keys simultaneously.  Electric typewriters revolutionized typing by using the keystrokes only as signals for the machine to do do the rest.

Hard to believe how much the world has changed since then...

1930-001-107   Camelot

Golden bronze with tan patina
Description

The medal's obverse bears Merlin and knights watching Arthur drawing the sword from an anvil. On anvil, incuse EXCALIBUR; on building at left, signed JDL sc. with initials in script.

The reverse bears a mountaintop castle with six towers around keep; clouds behind. Below, CAMELOT.

While the Arthurian legend is very popular and has been told, retold, and re-retold many times, I have never been a fan of anything but the original and the most faithful renditions. This medal with its mythical castle and a somewhat stylized depiction of the crucial moment in Arthur's life does not talk to me like many of the other medals of the series do.

This design by Di Lorenzo was chosen as the 107th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series.

The medal measures 73mm in diameter and was produced by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut. Its reported mintage is 750 pieces in bronze and an unknown number of pieces in silver.

Mars - 15 Years of Service Medal
1983
by David Castruccio
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears corporate building with flag at top, scenes from corporate life in ring around small raised center field bearing roman numerals from VII to XII followed by I through VI arranged in old-fashioned, semi-circular floor display style, snowflake and flowers beneath.

The reverse bears legend only. Around, · QUALITY · RESPONSIBILITY · MUTUALITY ·  / EFFICIENCY · FREEDOM; in center field, IN / RECOGNITION / OF YOUR PERSONAL / CONTRIBUTION / TO OUR SUCCESS / (cartouche inscribed to John F. Bozzuffi / 15 Years) / (M&M / MARS logo)

My guess is that the centerfield represent a commitment to not let work intrude into private life. Work is represented by the roman numerals indicating the time from 7am to 6pm. Private life is symbolized by the snowflake and the flowers.

This is the 15 year service medal of M&M Mars. Like Goodyear many years earlier, they Mars chose different medal designs for different lengths of service or association.

The circular medal measures 76.3mm in idameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company. No mintage is reported.
