Franco-American Union Medal
1886
by Louis Oscar Roty
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse shows two women, symbolising France and America, seated in an open boat, rowed by an angel wearing a phrygian bonnet (a symbol of the French Revolution). In the distance on the left is the Statue of Liberty. Around top, VNION · FRANCO · AMERICAINE / STATVE · COLOSS-ALE · DE · LA · LIBERTÉ · ECLAIRANT · LE · MONDE / 28 OCTOBRE / M.D.CCCLXXXVI; signed around lower left, O. Roty.

The reverse shows the shields of America and France resting on a laurel branch, with a profile portrait of Bartholdi, facing left, in a medallion between them.  Around, SOUVENIR · DE · L'INDEPENDANCE · AMERICAINE; across,  MONVMENT / ERIGÉ · PAR · LA · FRANCE / ET · L'AMERIQVE · EN · SOUVENIR / · DE · LEVR · ANCIENNE · AMITIÉ / 1776 - 1876; flanking cartouche at bottom, HAVTEVR · DE / LA · STATVE · 46'''8 - HAVTEVR · DV / PIÉDESTAL · 35'''

This medal commemorates the Franco-American Union, formed in 1875, which planned and ultimately brought about the creation of the Statue of Liberty. The statue was a gift of friendship from France to the U.S.A. in recognition of the friendship established between the two nations during the American Revolution.

The Union agreed that the monument would represent the work of both nations. The statue would be made by the French and transported to the U.S.A. and the Americans would build its pedestal. The sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) started work immediately. The statue was dedicated on 28th October 1886.

The circular medal measures 68.8mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Paris Mint. No mintage is reported.

Parts of the description are from the Victoria and Albert Museum's record for this medal.

by Gaetano Cecere
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The plaque bears pegasus, facing left, with rider looking backwards towards large camera with tripod he holds in left arm; city below.

I only wish that my budget allowed me to own this beautiful Art Deco plaque. Cecere created a small masterpiece, probably for a studio or as an award plaque, but I have no details about it.  Any information on it would be welcome.

The rectangular cast bronze plaque measures 267mm x 342mm.

A heartfelt thank-you to Bob Jaeger from Renaissance Man Antiques for permission to use this image.

Study for "Faust - Der Mephisto" Galvano Plaque
1912
by Jeno Juszko
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The galvano plaque bears portrait of moustachioed, older man, three quarters facing. Signed on truncation, Juszko 1912

While I could not definitively identify the subject of this plaque, I managed to locate a Medallic Art Company medal from 1913 in the ANS archives that has a very similar portrait differing only in details. It bears the legend "FAUST - DER MEPHISTO."  This makes me believe that the subject is an opera singer who performed as Dr. Faust at the Metropolitan Opera.

The circular plaque measures 101.8mm in diameter.

Minneapolis Honeywell Service Medal
1935
by Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears view of Honeywell Regulator Company's building with central tower. Around, >>> MINNEAPOLIS · HONEYWELL · REGULATOR · COMPANY >; at lower right, 1885 / 1935

The reverse bears Butz damper flapper at left and gas burner with flame at right. Across, PRESENTED TO / JULICE M. WHEALIN / IN RECOGNITION / OF OVER FIFTEEN / YEARS OF FAITHFUL / SERVICE

Honeywell's roots go back to 1885, when an inventor named Albert Butz patented the furnace regulator and alarm. He formed the Butz Thermo-Electric Regulator Co., Minneapolis, in April, 1886, and soon invented a device he called the "damper flapper," an ingenious predecessor to the modern thermostat.

The damper flapper was a relatively simple device. When a room cooled below a predetermined temperature, a thermostat closed the circuit and energized an armature. This pulled the stop from the motor gears, allowing a crank attached to the main motor shaft to turn one-half revolution. A chain connected to the crank opened the furnace's air damper to let in air. This made the fire burn hotter. When the temperature rose to the preset level, the thermostat signaled the motor to turn another half revolution, closing the damper and damping the fire. The temperature correction was automatic.

In 1927 the company merged with with the company Mark Honeywell had founded in 1904 to form the Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company.

The circular medal measures 75.8mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company.  No mintage is reported.

North, Central, and South American Exposition New Orleans Medal
1885-86
by Peter L. Krider
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears buffalo on mound, palm tree and four female figures representing the three native American and colonial European cultures. In exergue, THE THREE AMERICAS; above exergue at right, PHILA.

The reverse bears wreath of corn, cotton and tobacco around legend. In center field, AWARDED BY / THE / NORTH CENTRAL / AND / SOUTH AMERICAN / EXPOSITION / 1885 - 86 / NEW ORLEANS.

This is a very handsome exposition medal. I find it particularly interesting how the design incorporates four figures instead of the more commonly expected three.  Thus the figures become representative of  culture rather than geography.

The circular medal measures 73.2mm in diameter. No mintage is known.
