1871
by William Barber
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Abraham Lincoln facing right. Around, ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENT UNITED STATES.; signed under truncation, BARBER

The reverse bears stylized wreath with legend, MARCH 4. 1861 / TO / APRIL 15. 1865. / EMANCIPATION / PROCLAIMED / JAN. 1. 1863.; in exergue, MEDAL SERIES OF THE / U.S. MINT. / J. POLLOCK - 1871-  DIRECTOR

This handsome medal can be seen as an expression of gratitude from Mint director James Pollock to his friend Abraham Lincoln.  Not only did they serve in Congress together, but they also boarded at the same boardinghouse!  When Pollock retired from Congress, Lincoln appointed him Director of the U.S. Mint.

The circular medal measures 45mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the U.S. Mint in the years between 1871 and 1904. A total of 363 pieces were struck in that period,155 of them in 1872 alone. The medal is usually identified as Julian CM-16.

Most of the information on this medal came from John Kraljevich's  website.

Mercury Plaque
by Arthur Lee
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The plaque's obverse bears nude Mercury, head turned towards left. He is soaring above sea, moon and star to his left, sun to his right. Signed around bottom right, ARTHUR LEE

I do not know much about this plaque. It appears to be an "unbranded" design of the Lehman Anniversary medallion's obverse. I would guess that this is a design that was created prior to Lehman Brothers' medallic commission and was then modified in accordance with customer requirements.

The subtly oval plaque measures 111.2mm x 115.7mm and was cast in bronze.

The Allston Family
1983
by Adlai S. Hardin
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The obverse bears William and Rachel Allston walking in front of their Brookgreen Plantation home. Above, 1739 - WILLIAM ALLSTON - 1781 / PLANTATION OWNER; in exergue, BROOKGREEN GARDENS / SOUTH CAROLINA

The reverse bears Washington Allston seated at his easel, pallette and brush in hand. Around, 1779 WASHINGTON ALLSTON 1843 - DISTINGUISHED PAINTER

This was the eleventh of the prestigious Brookgreen Gardens member medals, issued in 1983. Overall, I find the design of this medal a bit static and wooden.  It's not one of the strongest Brookgreen Gardens medals.

The circular medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company. No mintage is reported.
